We have an awesome house tour for you guys today and joining us is our dad Master Wu for some Feng Shui guidance. Feng shui is not one-size-fits-all and difficult to generalize. An expert has to calculate a structure’s shape, magnetic direction, and many other unique factors.
The homeowner’s relationship to a home is then determined by his or her gender and birth details. Feng shui experts say energies and directions change yearly, making it important to get your home’s design in tune every year.
In Chinese culture, red is the color that will keep evil away. It also attracts positive energy, abundance, good health, and prosperity.
In ancient China, red was an auspicious color used for the entrances to shrines. Building codes in China stipulated that only high-ranking government officials could paint their doors red, which is one reason why red is associated with prosperity.
Going back to what we mentioned in our previous video, the front door of your home is the mouth of the chi aka. a gateway to feng shui.
South is the only direction with a feng shui element of fire. So the best color to use is red. Brown and wood tone colors also complement south-facing homes. If you don’t want to paint your door red, that is ok! Your door entryway with the color red is a gateway to luck, health, and money.
Chinese homes that are built in accordance with feng shui principles often face south to welcome the strong yang energy represented by that direction. Your home may not face in that direction, though, and to invite the most auspicious energy, you should paint your door the color that is most appropriate for the direction it does face.
Kitchen:
We constantly exchange energy with our surroundings. The kitchen is the feng shui part of the home that nourishes and sustains life- symbolizing wealth and prosperity. That explains why we LOVE to have family dinners at home! (family picture)
An airy and spacious kitchen that is clean and clutter-free, is a good feng shui kitchen. This leads to a good-spirited chef, which, in turn, leads to good energy meals for a happy family!
Don’t forget in our previous video, we mentioned to keep a bowl of fresh fruits in the center of the table is excellent feng shui. The more food you show, the more “richness of life” you possess.
Backyard footage:
In order to bring good energy and prosperity your way, Feng shui consists of appeasing the five elements
– wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
When planning the exterior of your home, you’ll be focusing on water, earth, and wood in particular. In feng shui philosophy, water is a symbol of wealth, and a garden should include a pond, swimming pool, or a waterfall.
While all the other elements are essential, water is extremely important in Feng Shui as it is the ancient Chinese symbol of prosperity and abundance.
Flowing water symbolizes income. This could be a river, lake, or pond. As long as the water is clean and flowing in a peaceful way, it symbolizes wealth aka money coming in each month! Plus, the sight and sound of moving water are relaxing, reduces stress, and enhances air quality.
Lucky and Unlucky Numbers - Finding Your Right Home
Herrooo Hunnaaaay! Welcome back to our channel. Did you know May is Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month? Well if you didn’t, now you know.
Devona Wu and my Chinese name is Wu Wai Shan.
Lysandra Wu and my Chinese name is Wu Chee Lin aka Ling Ling.
Since its Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month, we wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to create these videos for you guys. We wanted to raise awareness about our culture and how it relates to our lives and our business. We are real estate agents in South Florida and work with quite a few Chinese clients. We’ve had to adapt to applying our culture to the real estate home buying process.
You probably didn’t know that door numbers, a layout of the house, closing dates, and position of your homes (facing N, E, S, W) matter when looking for properties. We covered some basic feng shui tips for you in our previous videos, If you haven’t checked them out. Do so by clicking this link right here!
Let’s dive right in so you can get a better understanding of what we are talking about today! There are over 200 dialects in Chinese. We speak Cantonese so the examples we are going to give you will be in Cantonese.
We mentioned closing dates playing a significant role in our real estate transactions. The reason for this is because Chinese families follow this book “Tung Sing” which deals with what is suitable to do on each day, for example, purchasing a home, selling a home, signing big contracts, wedding ceremonies, funerals, birth and etc.
Tung Sing is the Chinese Almanac Calendar. The book of Tung Sing contains information on auspicious and inauspicious days for these big and little events in your life. We have clients that ask for specific closing dates in order for a contract to be signed, they live by this calendar for all major events in their lives.
Numbers- why do numbers matter when buying a home? Or your life in general?
In the Chinese tradition certain numbers are believed to be auspicious and inauspicious based on the numbers having pronunciations that are similar to words with lucky or unlucky meanings.
Two auspicious numbers are 6 and 8
6 is pronounced (Lok) and good fortune is pronounced (Lu) - you see how that sounds very similar to each other? Here is another example, 8 is pronounced (baat) and to prosper is pronounced (faat). 8' is the most favored number in modern China due to its association with wealth and luck. The Chinese love this number both in trivial matters and in big moments. 8 is given the highest priority when buying a house.
For example, an apartment on the eighth floor will be most coveted in that entire building. The number 8 is viewed as such an auspicious number that even being assigned a number with several eights is considered very lucky.
Here are some Fun facts about the number 8:
The opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing began on 8/8/08 at 8 minutes and 8 seconds past 8 pm local time
The Air Canada route from Shanghai to Toronto is Flight AC88.
The United Airlines route from Beijing to San Francisco is Flight UA888, the route from Beijing to Newark is Flight UA88
As part of the grand opening promotions, a Commerce Bank branch in New York's Chinatown raffled off safety deposit box No. 888.
An inauspicious number is 4
4 is pronounced (Sei) and is considered an unlucky number in Chinese because it is nearly homophonous to the word death in Cantonese, which is (Séi). Many buildings and apartments in East Asia omit the 4th floor and room numbers containing the number 4 due to this reason. It’s similar to the Western tradition of not having the 13th floor because 13 is considered an unlucky number.
So let’s tie these numbers into real estate and your home.
Here is a great example… We took our Chinese clients to a new project to look for potential homes. The townhouses were great, priced well, beautiful high ceilings and layout but let me show you one of the models we walked into. Look at this door number 4444. As soon as we saw it, we knew this will not work for our client and of course, they saw it and mentioned DIE DIE DIE DIE!
So we move onto the townhouse next door. This time the door was 4424 which is pronounced Sei Sei Yee Sei, basically translates die easily. Long story short this was no longer an option for our client.
Let’s talk about some good numbers though.
Our grandmother and grandfather’s house growing up had the door number 12932 which is yut yee gau sam yee. Sounds similar to gau saan yee (an abundance of business). We aren’t sure if that’s part of the reason for them choose this home, we should ask our family about this.
The numbers 168 is pronounced yut lok faat - fortune all the way. And with that said, Chinese love money!

Basic Feng Shui Tips for Your Home Part 2
Welcome back. Let’s jump right into these basic feng shui tips we compiled for you.
Fix the squeaky doors! Does your entry door squeak or wiggle when you open or close it? Remember the front door is referred to as mouth of the chi. It is the first and last thing you encounter when you come in and out of your house. The sounds of the squeaky door resembles the sound of crying and this can affect your well being and mood. This applies to the rest of the doors in the house, as well.
Hang feel-good art. What you see when you walk in directly impacts your emotional state and sets the tone for your entire home.
Windows symbolize your eyes to the world. So keep your windows clean. Best way to clean your windows is with some vinegar and water OR newspaper and windex is the best! You want to be able to see and experience everything the universe has to offer.
Focus on symmetry. Remember balanced layout equals balanced energy. So bedrooms should have equal access to the beds from both sides, the side tables and lamps do not have to match completely but will need to be similar in size and shape.
Living room
Living room contains the most energy in your home and it also encourages gatherings amongst family and friends.
Your living room should be bright and open with windows to allow natural light flow. Feng Shui encourages natural lighting. Mirrors also work to reflect light and make the room feel more open. Do not allow the mirror to face the front door. If you don’t have large windows, try adding as much lighting as possible.
Provide ample space in your living room. The area should not be filled with a lot furniture that prevents the flow of positive chi, also known as energy. Empty spaces ease movement within the room.
Dining Room
Maintain a balance of colors in your dining room, not too bright and not too dull.
Opt for a round or oval shape in choosing a dining table. This allows the chi to flow throughout a room. It also minimizes the distance of food items from any family members at the dinner table. If you have a square or rectangular-shaped dining table you can make it work by balancing it with a round shape rug.
Throw away chipped and broken dinnerware. Your plates, glasses, and utensils need to be well maintained.
A rounded bowl filled with rounded fruit, in the center of the table, is excellent feng shui; the more food you show, the more “richness of life” you possess. Flowers are also a lovely decoration. Yellow ones are ideal to enhance communication. Silk, paper, or plastic flowers are also fine. However, don’t use dried flowers because they represent decay and stagnation.
Home office
Some basic feng shui principles to enhance productivity, creativity, and even your earnings. These tips will probably come in handy for the current working from the home situation for many. Try to keep your home office separate from your personal space. Even if it’s in your bedroom, see if you can section it off or add a partition.
If you have a separate room that is designated for your office space, keep your desk positioned in the center of the room facing the door so you can see anyone who enters your workspace. This is known as the power position and it signifies that you are asserting yourself as the powerful creator of your own life.
A solid wall behind the desk is the best option, or if you have windows behind the desk, you can add curtains. This will add stability and keep the chi from flowing out the window.
Keep it clutter free. Clutter can drain your energy.
One last little tip we want to leave for you- Plants can contribute to positive feng shui in many ways. They can balance the water element, bring fortune or luck, purify the air, counteract negative energy, and help bring the outdoors in. Using the right plants may help balance the energy in your home to create an overall more positive atmosphere. Plants embody life energy, so it will add freshness and vitality to your home.

Basic Feng Shui Tips for your Home
Herrroooo hunaaay! As real estate agents in South Florida, we come across many homes. Knowing some Feng Shui through our culture and being raised by our father that has studied Feng Shui for over 20 years has been an advantage for us. The philosophy of feng shui is a practice of looking at our living spaces and working environment and striking a balance with the natural world. We would like to share some basic Feng Shui tips for your home. Since many of us are stuck at home during this time of self-quarantine, you can take full advantage of decluttering and bringing in all the positive chi!
Feng Shui is an ancient science used to create a harmonious, balanced and auspicious environment of universal energy “chi” also channeled in Tai Chi. The philosophy of feng shui was developed in China dating back to 400 B.C. It is a practice of looking at our living spaces and working environment and striking a balance with the natural world. The Chinese words feng shui translates to “feng" meaning “wind” and "shui" “ meaning water.
Balance is achieved through the interaction of 5 important elements. Wood, Metal, Earth, Water, and Fire! Feng Shui can get very detailed but we are going to keep it simple for you today. So, when it comes to your home- your bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen have the utmost importance for your health and well being. Also, the entry to your home should be inviting and clear of clutter. Clutter is a big NO-NO! Your home should be clutter-free.
Here are some basic feng shui tips for your home:
Front door
You want to make sure you have a strong front door so that you can welcome in all the positive energy!
The front door is referred to as the mouth of chi, the portal of energy.
The direct alignment of the front door straight to the back door should be avoided. When this occurs all the good Feng Shui energy coming through your main door and flows right out the back door without nourishing your home. However, it is not ideal to move to a new house or reconstruct your home so you can redirect the energy by placing plants, furniture, or sofas to help circulate the chi.
Bedroom
Furniture in the bedroom needs to be symmetrical for balance and access to both sides of the bed creating a good flow for the chi
No junk under the bed - storage under the bed can obstruct your sleeping pattern because the movement of energy cannot flow evenly.
Generally speaking, you want your bed located so that when you’re lying in bed, you can see the door of the bedroom. This can get a little tricky since there are other factors that can play a part in this but we can save that for another day.
A mirror helps energy flow- BUT if placed incorrectly it can be a culprit to sleepless nights, restlessness, amplifies your worries and/or the cause of unrest. Do not place the mirror reflecting the bed. This means next to the bed, in front of the bed, above the bed.
Symmetrical mirrors above nightstand - amplify the energy.
Bathroom
This is another tricky one since it has many factors in determining good or bad Feng Shui. Generally speaking always keep the bathroom clean and tidy. Water represents wealth, prosperity, cash flow, career, and circulation of your wealth. Good chi energy is alive, vibrant, and pure. Yet, the bathroom is deposits of germs which creates de-natured chi. So keep that toilet seat down and the door closed. No mirror reflecting toilet/trash and add an air purifying plant to the bathroom to balance the space.
Kitchen
The kitchen is part of the home that nourishes and sustains life. It is the symbol of wealth and prosperity.
Always keep your countertops free of clutter, cupboards in order, and dispose of any garbage every day.
Knives should be kept in a drawer; if you have a knife block then this should be kept inside a cupboard, not on top of the worktops.
Avoid painting your kitchen red, this is to avoid an imbalance of fire energy already created by the stovetop.
A bowl of fresh fruit (symbolizes- fruition, enhances positive energy and longevity)
We hope this information has been useful to you. Take advantage of this time and get rid of all that negative energy and radiate the positive chi! Let’s Flourish!
